The Republic History

The Pink,White and Green flag knitted into this salt and pepper group has a long History here in Newfoundland. I chose Salt and Pepper as the main shade because is was the traditional colour of the work socks  and caps of that era.  The salt and pepper colour is  still popular today. This following information can be found on the website www.heritage.nf.ca  follow the link  on Heraldry and Flags. This Tri-colour Flag sometimes called the "Pink,White and Green"  came about in the 1800's in the St. John's area of Newfoundland. It had a connection with the Sealing Vessels. The following song was written in 1902 about it.

The Flag of Newfoundland

The pink the rose of England shows,

The green St. Patrick's emblem bright,

While in between the spotless sheen

St. Andrew's cross displays the white.

Then hail the pink,the white, the green;

Our patriot long may it stand,

Our sire lands twine their emblem trine

To form the flag of Newfoundland.

What e'er betide our ocean bride

That nestles midst the Atlantic foam,

Still far and wide we'll raise with pride

Our native flag,o'er hearth and home.

Should e'er the hand of fate demand

Some future change in our career,

We ne'er will yield on flood or field

The Flag we honour and revere.

Fling out the flag o'er creek and craig;

Pink,white and green,so fair,so grand;

Long may it sway o'er bight and bay,

Around the shores of Newfoundland.
